Well, Will Smith isn’t coming back for the Independence Day sequel, so Dean Devlin and Rolan Emmerich are going to have to find some new blood for the franchise. That is why they have offered the lead role to Liam Hemsworth, according to The Wrap. No specifics about the role were provided.
Liam, who is Chris Hemsworth’s not-so-little brother, is best known for playing Gale in The Hunger Games franchise.
As for the film’s plot? That’s been kept mostly a secret. Director Rolan Emmerich did tell Empire in a 2013 interview, “It’s a parallel history. Humans rebuild whatever they have – bigger, newer, shinier – and then they forget. Maybe, 20 years later, [the aliens are] never coming back…”
Independence Day 2 arrives in theaters June 24, 2016.
