James Gunn Will Direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’

Disney and Marvel must be really pleased with the product of Guardians of the Galaxy, and the extremely good early word of mouth because Marvel and Disney have already signed director James Gunn to direct the sequel, which I think is a good sign for the quality of Guardians of the Galaxy.  For more read the article below that originates from Screenrant.com.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Rocket Raccoon Header James Gunn Will Direct Guardians of the Galaxy 2 If First Does Well

Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters in less than two weeks, and last night, media participating in the press junket for the film had a chance to see the first media screening. The reactions were very positive which is exactly what Disney and Marvel Studios wants to hear going into Comic-Con next week where it’s expected that they could announce seven films currently scheduled between 2016-19. And you can bet Guardians of the Galaxy is part of that lineup.

Writer and director James Gunn (read our set interview with Gunn here) came on for a segment on the The Adam Corolla Show and spoke about his thoughts on Guardians of the Galaxy, how he got the job and in it, he touched on what next potential projects he may work on. Having landed the big budget Marvel gig is affording the writer-director other opportunities already and job offers are coming in, but if GOTG is as successful as Marvel hopes, he’ll instead be going straight to work on a followup.

Gunn is an honest creator and re-wrote virtually the entire Guardians script to fit his vision. Even before the early reactions started coming in, he got the project to a point that he and Marvel are “really happy with it” which – depending on box office and critical results – and we have a hint on the latter – he’ll be working with them again.

“I’m actually in a somewhat weird position because if the movie does well, the I’m gonna make the sequel. And if it does okay then, well, I’ve already been offered other movies but I can only do those other movies if I don’t do the sequel, so it’s a weird situation.”

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is critical to the future, long-term story plans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe so it’s going to happen with or without Gunn which means you can count on a sequel being announced next week at Comic-Con alongside Marvel’s other Phase 3 plans. With three movies now set for release in the same year (in 2017) from Marvel Studios, we’d bet that’s when we’ll see it hit theaters, giving Gunn a break and three years to develop from start to release.

Without having seen Guardians of the Galaxy, are you excited at the potential of Marvel’s new cosmic team coming back, possibly expanding to include other characters from the comics

Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Nova Prime Rael and Benicio Del Toro as The Collector.

Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1, 2014, The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on July 17, 2015, Captain America 3 on May 6 2016, and unannounced films for July 8 2016 and May 5 2017, July 28 2017, November 3 2017, July 6 2018, November 2 2018 and May 3 2019.
